Chapter 9
Jake was not going to stop until he finished the next scene. It was hot and sticky outside and he was sitting on the porch swing tapping away on his laptop for hours while sweat dripped from his brow. He was immune to the heat while writing the screenplay that would star many celebrities, including the twins.
The pressure was on to put on a star-studded show. Elizabeth, Taylor and Jake had spent the last two nights sitting in the middle of the lake in those old wooden rowboats working out the details. Elizabeth had invited so many stars to be in the play and the ones who had free time on their schedule accepted right away. After she explained how they were desperate to save the theater, there were many who wanted to help, and volunteered their time, no questions asked. Now all Jake had to do was put them in the story and give each star a matching part.
He was sweating from more than the heat right now. If he failed to keep everyone happy, theyâd blame him and any future on the big screen would be unlikely. Jake stood to stretch his legs and leaned up against the post on the porch.
Did he really care if he had a Hollywood future? Over the years he had dreamed of being on the big screen, but then he came home to Hideaway Lake and all of a sudden his priorities changed. Now, he came here instead of trying to write in a tiny apartment in Baltimore. This place drew him when he finally made up his mind to come home.
He loved it here. He always had, even after his mother passed away. It had all been so mysterious back then as a kid. One day she was smiling from the boat as they made their way to the middle of the lake and the next thing he knew she was drowning in the water. He tried to save her. With every part of his being, he jumped in the water, screaming at the top of his lungs and desperately tried to drag her to the shore.
By the time his sister and dad got there, it had been too late. For months Jake wasnât able to look at the lake again. Even when Elizabeth and Taylor came to visit their Nana and begged him to come out and play, heâd sit in his room and ignore them. He never wanted to see the lake again.
After a while, the girls stopped asking him to join them and soon after, his dad loaded up all of their belongings and they moved to the city. Jake only came back after his dad passed away a few years ago. He wanted to find peace here and he did. It was now where he came to write since he wasnât able to find it any more in the city. He thought about moving here permanently.
He looked up to the sky. You looking down on me, Mama? I know now it wasnât my fault you died that day.
